Kosher Food in Portugal
After the expulsion in 1496, the forced conversions and the Inquisition, Jewish life and culture disappeared in Portugal, only a few crypto-Jewish families remaining. It wasn't until the mid-19th century that Jews were allowed to return and live in Portugal, but their arrival was slow and cautious. This explains the low number of Jewish families in Portugal throughout the 20th century and the lack of Kosher stores and restaurants. Fortunately, about five years ago, everything began to change. The first Kosher stores, restaurants and catering services have opened in Lisbon, Porto and Belmonte. Some hotels have also prepared themselves to receive Jewish customers by learning the rules and requirements for Shabbat. If you're traveling to Portugal and need Kosher food, we can help. We are in constant contact with the best suppliers and Jewish communities so that we can provide our customers with the best services.
